Parenting Lessons Learned!

The lessons I've learned this week are... (1) Just when you think you've got it figured out, it changes. Technically, we've already learned that lesson. However, it was reinforced this weekend - call it a refresher course. (2) Do not brag to your friends about your baby who never cries. It will come back to bite you.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it before on the blog, but Whit is a phenomenal baby. He RARELY cries. He sometimes cries in the morning if we’re being slow to feed him. He also will sometimes cry when we try to do tummy time, which he hates. But even then, it’s more of a whine than a cry. He’s also a great sleeper! His teachers at school always tell us “he slept the day away.” At home we’ve never had problems getting him to take naps, and he’s been sleeping through the night for the past month or so. During the day, when I notice that he’s getting sleepy, I lay him in his crib awake and he’s usually asleep five minutes later. He may whimper for a minute or two, but he doesn’t cry. When it’s bedtime, we stick to the same routine: bottle, bath, book, and then bed. Every night between 8 & 9pm after going through the same bedtime ritual, I lay him in the crib awake & kiss him goodnight. He’s usually asleep before I have time to turn on the monitor. We've never rushed to get home for his bedtime. We'll let him sleep in his carrier while we're out & then move him to the crib once home. Because he’s such a laid back baby, we’ve never tried to put him on a schedule. We put him down for a nap when he starts getting sleepy, and if we happen to be out somewhere, he falls asleep in his car seat fairly easily. Heaven, I know.

We had a pretty busy weekend, but it was very enjoyable. Friday Whit & I met John for lunch at MUSC. Then that evening we went out for Mexican food with our good friends, the Wienkes. Saturday we went to a “meet the neighbors” cookout down the street (where we were amazed at how virtually all our neighbors are affiliated with MUSC), and a birthday party for one of John’s classmates. Sunday, we met friends for brunch downtown at Moe’s Crosstown. Through it all Whit was his usual laid back self, and we bragged to our friends & neighbors about our great fortune to have such a good baby.

Our only clue of what was to come was that he didn’t sleep through the night Friday night.

Or Saturday night.

That brings us to Sunday. Before brunch we knew Whit was ready for nap, but he fought it. We decided to just let him fall asleep in the car on the way to Moe’s & let him nap while we ate. Whit had other ideas. He didn’t cry during brunch, but he was so, so sleepy. The rest of the afternoon was a struggle to get him to take a nap. We laid him down as usual, and a minute later he was screaming at the top of his lungs. I mean, he didn’t cry this hard when he got his immunization shots. It was as if we were being punished for bragging about our non-crying baby. The first time it happened John ran to the nursery thinking something was wrong. When he got there, Whit started grinning at him (cute, huh? um yeah, it’s only cute once!). We tried it all. Rocking, walking, back patting, etc. We finally let him cry it out, which was a very painful. We ended up having to turn the sound off the monitor. He did finally fall asleep – but only stayed asleep about 30 minutes. We had several more repeat performances which resulted in a lot of crying, but did not result in any more sleep.

At 7:30 pm we realized he had only napped a ½ hour ALL DAY. Not really knowing what else to do, I started going through his normal bedtime routine (bottle, bath, book, & bed) all the while thinking that John & I are in for a rough night. After laying him in his crib awake, I braced for the screams, but they never came. He peacefully fell asleep just like every other night we follow this routine. Best of all, he slept through the entire night.

Hmmmm. Maybe there is something to this “schedule” that everyone keeps asking me about.
We’ll see what the next week brings. While I’m not ready to jump on board yet with a strict schedule, it will NOT take many more days like this one for me to give it a shot.

Now, for eveyone's favorite part... Pictures! As you'll see, Whit is getting better at grabbing things he sees & wants. Of course, everything ends up in his mouth!

This is a typical look for Whit these days. He wears a bib anytime he's sitting up because he's a 24/7 drool machine and he is always trying to eat his bib. Also, the pacifier is now defunct b/c Whit immediately pulls it out, but doesn't know how to put it back in the right way.

He's can finally hold onto small toys like this Tigger that Nana C gave to the Easter Bunny to include in his Easter basket.

All toys (or anything else he's managed to grab) end up in his mouth.

All toys (& feet) are more fun when Daddy plays with them too.
