The Best Year Ever

It is absolutely unfathomable to me that Whit is a year old. It sounds cliche, but it seems like just yesterday John & I were driving to the hospital for me to be induced, full of anticipation. The first year has been filled with so many worries and joys, that they're impossible to recount. We are so, so thankful for Whit and the utter joy he's brought to our family!! I'm so excited to watch him grow up (not too fast though) and am honored to be his mother!

We went to the pediatrician yesterday for his one year well visit. Whit is doing great. He's in the 3rd percentile for weight (18 lbs & 11 oz), and somewhere between the 5th & 10th percentile for height (28.25 inches). Even though he's small, he's growing at a normal trend, which is what's important. After not being on the charts for weight for most of his first year, we're not complaining about the 3rd percentile!

Over the past month we've slowly (read reluctantly, but necessarily) been moving away from baby food. Now Whit eats all table food. That for me has been a very hard transition. After all, there's not much easier than opening a can of baby food. Whit eating whole, unprocessed foods is really important to me, as well as eating together as a family. However, since we don't get home until 5:45 or 6pm most nights, there's not a lot of time (or energy) for meal preparation. Also, we're on a pretty tight budget, so pre-made convenience foods that are available really aren't an option for us. Needless to say, I totally understand why so many children are fed fast food so often! We are still figuring out what works for us where this is concerned, so any & all suggestions are welcome!

The good news on that front is that Whit still seems to like EVERYTHING! So far the only thing he hasn't gobbled up is steamed zucchini & I don't blame him! We served some fairly spicy chili at his birthday party & he even loved that. He's also gotten much better at feeding himself. He can't use a spoon by himself yet, but he's a pro at eating with his fingers. His favorite food is still yogurt (though Cheerios might be closing in). Other great news is that Whit is almost totally off formula!! I've heard from others how their children hated milk at first after drinking formula for so long, but Whit didn't seem to care one bit. Milk might be expensive these days, but it's a lot cheaper than formula!!!

The biggest developmental news we have is that Whit is extremely mobile!! It only took one week of being in the creeper room at school and he was crawling! Until then, he was semi-mobile. He could get to where he wanted to go, but usually rolled or army crawled to get there. His old methods were pretty slow, so he was easy to watch. Now, you have to keep a much closer eye on him or he'll quickly be in the cat food or fire place!

He's also pulling up to stand. If something is attached to the ground, then he's going to use it to pull up. We've had a couple of nasty falls, but luckily nothing that has required a Dr. visit. His absolute favorite thing to do at the moment is to walk while holding onto your fingers for balance. We're trying to encourage him to take some steps on his own, but he's pretty timid & doesn't want to let go of our fingers. After the falls he's had, I don't blame him for preferring safety. Plus, it's pretty sweet.

Finally, he's got a few tricks up his sleeve. He can give you a high five, wave bye-bye and LOVES to give kisses. A kiss from Whit means that he's leaning into you with an open mouth & lots of slobber. It's the cutest thing I've ever seen, especially when he does it unprompted just b/c he wants to.

I took him to have some pic's made just before his b-day. A few of them are below...
