Potty Training - Take 1

We decided that last weekend would be a good weekend to start potty training Whit. There is a bullet point list of things that "They" (the internet people) tell you your child needs to be able to do first before they are ready to toilet train. Whit meets most of "their" requirements.

We have talked up the potty a lot. We've read books about the potty. We've watched Elmo's Potty Time video too many times. We set up small toy boxes beside the Whit's potties at the house to provide an incentive for him to sit on the potty. We bought pull ups. We bought Yo-Gabba-Gabba underpants (b/c we couldn't find Elmo ones). We bought M&M's and "stick-uhs" for rewards & motivation. We were prepared to not leave the house all weekend. In other words, we thought we were ready.

Our plan was to put Whit on the potty every 30 minutes. This started about 9am. The first two times he thought it was fun. And oh, the stick-uhs. He was So, So proud of his stick-uhs. "Daddy LOOO-OOOOK. I got ellow stick-uh." By the third time, he was over it. By the fourth time, he was whining when we tried to take him. Then he was whining constantly, about everything. By lunch he was flat out cranky & refused to even sit on the potty. Then he refused to eat his lunch. Then I realized he felt warm. Very warm. He had a fever over 103.

Potty training was immediately abandoned. Maybe another weekend. This is his third day of being sick, though his fever is now low-grade & he seems to be through the worst of it. We were really worried that Jack would catch whatever Whit has. So far we've been lucky & Jack seems as well as can be.

Today both boys are home with me all day since Whit couldn't go to daycare. It's the first weekday I've had both of them at home by myself. It's been a trying experience to say the least, but we're getting through the day. The house is a disaster & I've broken a dinner plate (which shattered into a billion shards on our dining room floor), but other than that everything is fine. Right now both boys are sleeping & I'm eating chocolate icing out the tub for lunch. Hey, it doesn't require a plate :).

P.S. - sorry there are no pictures in this post. John takes our home computer (with our pictures on it) to work with him everyday now, so I don't have the files to upload.
